ASC 350-30 Source License Treatment Balance Sheet

1,000+ Source Licenses|Term-Based vs. Perpetual|Carrying Value Model

Term-based → generally expensed over the license term. Perpetual or multi-use → capitalized as a separate intangible asset. The split across your 1,000+ source agreements determines the data asset on the balance sheet.

Expense it, or capitalize it?

Framing

GapMaps' data acquisition spend — 1,000+ source agreements across 21 countries — must be classified on the P&L: COGS (expensed over the term) or capitalized intangible (amortized over useful life). The classification is not one-size-fits-all. It turns on two axes.

What the classification depends on

Axis I

License term

Term-based licenses are generally expensed over the term. Perpetual licenses or outright purchases are eligible to capitalize as a separate intangible asset.

Axis II

Alternative future use

Data used across multiple product lines or applications qualifies. Data used for a single application does not.

Where GapMaps stands

GapMaps' data feeds eight product lines — POI, Demographics, Visitation, Traffic, Consumer Segmentation, Hotel & Hospitality, Shopping Center, and the Data Marketplace. The alternative-future-use criterion is met. The question reduces to: which of the 1,000+ source agreements are term-based, and which are perpetual?

Treatment by source license type

Each source agreement falls into one of three categories. The treatment follows.

License Type Example (GapMaps sources) 350-30 Treatment P&L Line
Term-basedFixed-date expiry (12-mo, 2-yr, 3-yr) Infobel annual POI refresh; Azira visitation license; AGS demographics subscription; Panolytica segmentation (May 2026) Generally expensed over the license term (CBIZ 2025) COGS · EXPENSED OVER TERM
PerpetualNo expiry; right to use continues indefinitely One-time POI dataset purchase; perpetual license to a country's base layer Capitalize as separate intangible asset (ASC 350-30-25-1) INTANGIBLE → AMORTIZE
Outright purchaseFee-simple ownership; no license terms Purchased dataset with full IP transfer (e.g., a country's POI base layer bought outright) Capitalize as separate intangible asset (ASC 350-30-25-1) INTANGIBLE → AMORTIZE

The split ratio drives the carrying value

At 1,000+ source agreements, the portfolio is almost certainly a mix of term-based and perpetual/multi-use licenses. The ratio determines how much of the data spend lands on the balance sheet as an asset vs. the income statement as COGS.

Illustrative split

Term-based · COGS 65% Perpetual · Capitalized 35%
Worked example: At $1.5M annual source licensing spend and a 65/35 split, $975K hits COGS expensed over the license term and $525K becomes an amortizable intangible asset on the balance sheet.

Reading the mix

Only the perpetual and outright-purchase slice capitalizes as an intangible asset. The term-based slice still flows through COGS — generally expensed over the license term, not expensed all at once.

At a 65/35 split: 65% of source licensing spend hits COGS over the term. 35% becomes an amortizable intangible on the balance sheet.

Your data marketplace sells every product as a yearly license — no one-off purchases. The selling side is term-based by design. The buying side is where the split lives.

The actual split depends on the contract language in each of the 1,000+ agreements. The illustration above is a directional starting point, not a measurement.

Inventory every source agreement

  1. Inventory all 1,000+ source agreements — Infobel, Azira, AGS, Panolytica, and the 990+ smaller feeds. (CoreLogic and Nearmap are API integrations in GapMaps Live — no 350-30 classification question.)
  2. Classify by term — fixed-date expiry (term-based) vs. no expiry (perpetual) vs. outright purchase.
  3. The perpetual and outright-purchase slice is the capitalizable asset.
  4. The term-based slice is not — generally expense through COGS over the license term.
  5. Document the split ratio for the balance sheet and any future investor or M&A due diligence file.
If the perpetual slice supports it

If the capitalized slice is material, it can underwrite a prepay facility against committed licensing spend — 18–24 month tenor, security interest only, no IP transfer, priced off the data revenue multiple. nino@quantifiable.org
